Installation of Solar Street Lights in Punjab

In the village of Pandwal in Mohali, residents grappled with the challenges posed by poor street lighting. As darkness fell, the lack of illumination not only increased the risk of accidents but also restricted the movement of villagers, creating a sense of unease, especially for women, children, and the elderly. The lack of sufficient illumination also prevented small-scale commercial activities after sunset, stifling the vibrancy and economic potential of the community

Understanding the impact of this lighting deficit on the villagers’ lives, ReSL’s business entity in Nimbua stepped in to help. We sponsored the installation of 30 solar powered streetlights across key roads in the village, community spaces, and market areas.

As a result of this initiative, around 5,000 villagers’ have directly benefited owing to improved security and mobility. Notably, it is now easier for women and children to move around in the evenings, ensuring greater gender safety and inclusion in community life. Moreover, feedback from the community not only points towards increased economic activity in the evenings, but also more social interactions in public spaces. Importantly, the initiative has also helped the village lower its dependence on conventional electricity and take a key step towards sustainability
