Solid Waste Management
The Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026, notified by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, came into force on April 1, 2026, replacing the 2016 framework and comprehensively overhaul waste management by integrating Circular Economy and Extended Producer Responsibility principles. The rules mandate four-stream segregation of waste at source – wet, dry, sanitary, and special care waste, introduce Bulk Waste Generator accountability, a centralized online reporting portal, and Environmental Compensation for non-compliance. Focusing on zero waste to landfill, with landfill dependence being phased out and compliance obligations tightening, organisations now need clear pathways to fulfil their EPR responsibilities under the new framework.
